The Woodside VLF Transmitter is the tallest structure in Australia at 432m. It is a guyed mast with an umbrella antenna and was built in around 1975. The umbrella antenna is 1.5km in diameter. It was part of the US Omega system, developed by the US Navy for military aircraft navigation, then commercial aviation. It was eventually replaced by GPS navigation. See http://www.jproc.ca/hyperbolic/omega.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OMEGA_Navigation_System and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLF_Transmitter_Woodside. The Woodside Omega transmitter was shut down in 2004 and is now used as a VLF transmitter on 18.6kHz. It is located 8km from the Victorian coast, 85km north of Wilsons Promontory. Modelled by Peter Olsen, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, Australia.
