Sioux Falls is home to the Modern Hot-Air Balloon. Recreational Ballooning as we know it today started over 50 years ago when Ed Yost and Ravin Industries of Sioux Falls developed a balloon envelope with airborne heater. Today, the Sioux Falls Balloon club consists of over 30 balloons flown by 20 pilots. The Great Plains Balloon Race takes place in Sioux Falls, the first weekend of June. Each year the event draws balloonists and spectators from around the country.
