A dozen of these boxes were built for an AIDS orphanage in Welkom, South Africa. The only material available was 1/2" (13mm) particle board. The challenge was to create a strong box since particle board does not hold screws well. An age-old trick was employed using short lengths of 8mm dowels located so that the screws would "bite" into the dowels, making for a strong joint. Pilot holes and countersinks were drilled for the 1-1/4" wood screws. Glue was added during assembly for a strong and sturdy box.
