At the southern end of the "Maximilanstraße" an ensemble of sacral buildings can be found. Its center is the basilica St. Ulrich and Afra, a catholic parrish church. Today's brick basilica was built between 1474 and 1500 and replaces former churches at this site. The chancel was added afterwards, but was only completed in 1603/04 due to the religious wars at this time, especially the iconoclasm of 1537. Since 1937 the church is a pontifical basilica. In the interiour the church contains many features that catch the eye, such as f.e. the network-like vaulted ceiling. Below the floor there's the so called "Unterkirche ", which houses the tombs of St. Ulrich and St. Afra after which the church has been named. The Chapel of Our Lady (in German also called "Schneckenkapelle" due to the spiral stairway to it) has been added in 1600 north east of the nave. Below it is the sacristy.
