The old Jackson County Courthouse in Webster was built of bricks and wood in 1888 and replaced an older, 1851 wood frame courthouse on the same site. It served the county well for 25 years, but when the county seat moved to Sylva in 1914 and the iconic neoclassical courthouse was built at the end of Main Street in Sylva, the old 1888 Courthouse ceased to be used. It stood for about 20 years empty, unloved, and abandoned, and was demolished around 1934 and its bricks, wood, roof, and windows used to build the Rhinehart House on the corner of Buchannan Loop and NC 116. Across the street, the Jail still stands as a private residence, but seriously modified. The courthouse is missed today, but its been gone a long time and Webster no longer has any businesses within its town limits, only homes, the old 1936 WPA Rock School serving as County Offices and a daycare, a small 1960s post office, two turn-of-the-century churches, and the original 1851 town Cemetary on Buchanan Loop not too far from the site of the Courthouse. Webster is lively, but feels empty when one thinks about its history.
