The Queen Elizabeth School, School Hill, Godmanchester is situated on School Hill adjacent to the Chinese Bridge (the Bridge built by James Gallier) Allthough still called the Queen Elizebeth School, it has not operated as one for many years. The school site back dates to the year 1558, however very little is known of the original structure. What is here now is a mismatch of extensions and renovations. Today the building operates as a Museum during the summer months and offers a place for groups and classes to meet during the week. National Heritage Description: Date Listed: 28 November 1950, Grade 2, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School TL 2470 4/35 28.11.50. II GV 2. Probably from about the date of the foundation 1560; altered and restored in 1851 and with modern additions. 1 storey, red brick, tile roof, original gabled porch on south. Main building has plinth and simple brick entablature below eaves level and continued around the porch; brick pilasters at angles. The side elevation has 2 windows to the front C16 gable, one to the C19 rear gable. The whole building is very rebuilt but retains quite a lot of C16 brickwork. Inscription over porch commemorates foundation by Elizabeth I. (Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v1.0.)
