The church was built in 1902-1907 and it recieved its cathedral status in 1923 when Tampere became a bishop city. The cathedral is built of gray granite and the roof is made of red bricks. The main architect was Lars Snock while the inner decorations were made by artists Hugo Simberg and Magnus Enckell. The church is considered to be main architectural monument of Finnish national romanticism. The church is very popular concert and wedding church. The church has seats for almost 2 000 people.
