National Historic Building - The Southwest Brewery and Ice Co. Building is located at 601 Commercial Avenue NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. The original building that was built on this site in 1888, was later renovated between 1897 - 1898. The renovation included a coal burning power plant having two 75 foot tall smoke stacks which were located directly south of this building. The Power plant was later torn down leaving only the building depicted in this model standing. It remains as one of the only surviving red brick railroad era buildings in Albuquerque. During the turn of the century, the Southwestern Brewery & Ice Company was one of Albuquerque’s largest employers, employing over 250 people at it’s pinnacle. It was the home of “Glorieta Beer” which was brewed at this location from 1898 through World War II, having a brief hiatus during the prohibition years when it was allowed to continue operation as an ice house. The building was entered into the State of New Mexico Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1975, and later in the National Register of Historic Places on March 30, 1978.
