This building was constructed by Mr Henry Cawte, one of seven tenderers, for a tender total of £22504 for the then Southampton Harbour Board (a role now occupied by Associated British Ports). The foundation stone (front right hand corner) was laid on 8th May 1924 and the building was officially opened by Earl Jellicoe of Scapa on 8th September 1925. The facade was originally supposed to be all artificial stone, but the first floor was changed to red brick with stone dressings due to stone supply problems. The front half of the building is original but the back half has been modified several times over the years. The wind vane on top of the tower is a model of the Mayflower, similar to the other fixed ship on top of the nearby Mayflower Memorial. The building is now occupied by Maxims Casino.
