Completed in 1988, 1133 Connecticut, NW, Washington, DC architecture combines classic design elements in a modern language, conveying a transitional yet timeless appearance. 1133 is a 12-story commercial building that consists of office space and one retail store on the street level.
1133 occupies a prominent corner on Connecticut Avenue, adjoining a series of exclusive shops; modern glass and granite office buildings span the opposite side of Connecticut and the elegant Mayflower Hotel rests on the corner across DeSales Street. To unite these disparate styles, a classical foundation was established with a traditional tripartite division. The base itself is divided into a two story colonnade section and an attic story, rendered in limestone and tan brick alternating above a line of polished black granite. From a distance, it works as a unified three-story element; divided, it maintains the proper two-story proportioning for the entrances and show windows.
The building has two primary entrances, one directly on the corner for the store, and another at the northern edge for the office lobby. The office entrance has a more formal treatment defined by a limestone bracket-supported pediment covering a two story arched opening with a glass and metal canopy; a stone paving pattern begins in the sidewalk and flows into the building. The store entrance, covered with simpler glass and metal canopies, is located under the large curtain wall and masonry frame.
