The original fireplace was a small insert in a wall of brick; this project helped improve the scale. The ceramic tile was applied directly to the brick with mastic. The mantle verticals are 3/4" plywood sides and a curved 1/4" face; the hollow backs slide over blocking attached to the brick, and are attached with a couple of finish nails.
