Thomas Jefferson’s architecture is inextricably entwined with his philosophy of politics, education, religion, and the arts. The design for his home, Monticello, grew out of his deep engagement in all things classical, particularly his appreciation of the work of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. In 1993 the AIA posthumously awarded Jefferson the Gold Medal, reminding us that architecture was not the least of this towering figure’s talents. Modeled by Crystal V. Olin.
