St Marys's Lighthouse, completed in 1898 using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks was built on a hazardous coast for shipping, and remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. It can only be reached between the tides via a short causeway making it a part-time island. The lighthouse is now a visitor centre and the visitors can climb the 137 steps to the top, which provides spectacular views of the North East coast.
