Privately developed for lease to the Federal government, the Export-Import bank was the original tenant and still occupies the Lafayette Building. The building was designed to provide space for street level shops, which remain, but have undergone some changes since the its opening. The design of the building was co-commissioned to Holabird and Root of Chicago with collaborating partner A.R. Clas of Washington DC.
