This building, which houses Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, was constructed in 1985. It was named for Henry M. Black, a 1929 graduate of Iowa State University and head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1946 to 1972. The 118,000 square feet provide state- of-the-art laboratories for material testing, nondestructive evaluations, vibrations testing, the study of thermal sciences, fluids and other experimental activities. One of the unique design features of Black Engineering is that it is a model of energy efficiency, with an advanced heating and cooling system that varies the amount of air circulating in the building for maximum comfort and minimum fuel use. Another feature is that the facade repeats the intervals between the brick and fenestration showing economic material use and constructability. This model was completed by Benjamin Schwartz.
