When it was built in 1893, the Monadnock Building was the world's largest office building. The simple lines and curves of the building foreshadow the modernist sensibilities which would soon come to prominence in Chicago and elsewhere. The structure of the building is masonry load bearing walls, making it one of the tallest of this type in the world. You can see the extreme thickness of the walls in the bulge at the bottom, the walls are 6 feet thick! Architects Burnham & Root designed the north half of the Monadnock; Holabird & Roche designed the south half. It is 197 feet tall (60 meters) and has 17 floors. Model by Mason Thrall.
