Located on the National Mall in Washington D.C., the Arts and Industries Building was opened in 1881. The exterior of the building was redone two years later to incorporate a more vibrant and warm maroon colored brick. The layout of the building is a design with a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross with a central rotunda atop. The buildings deteriorating condition led the National Trust for Historic Preservation to name the building as one of America’s Endangered Places, acknowledging its uncertain future without intervention, and thereby taking steps to preserve this historical site.
