The abundant, funnel-shaped blooms of this striking species, which may be various shades of red, open at night in the summer and last about two days. Its short spines are yellow or brown. When young, the thick cylindrical body is erect, but it rapidly forms large dense clumps of creeping stems. This is a very robust plant if given full sun.
