The Opel Speedster is a British-designed and British-built roadster produced from 2001 to 2005 by Lotus for General Motors's subsidiary Opel and was also badged as Vauxhall VX220 for the UK market. In addition, South Korea's GM-Daewoo has also had Speedsters displayed with the Daewoo badge. The Speedster has a lot in common with the Lotus Elise, yet Opel claims few parts are interchangable. Both are characterized by strong performance and superb handling. Since the beginning of production, the Speedster and VX220 were powered by GM's 2.2 L 16-valve Ecotec L61 engine producing 147 hp ECE (108 kW). Since 2003, they are also available with a 2.0 L turbocharged version of this engine producing 200 hp ECE (147 kW). Thanks in part to the car's light weight, the turbo version is able to reach the top speed of 242 km/h (151 mph) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.9 seconds. The Speedster utilizes an aluminum and carbon fiber chassis tub that weighs only 150 pounds, the entire car weighs in at only 2050 pounds, much lighter than most small sports cars. With its low weight, mid-mounted engine, high torisional rigidity, and ample horsepower, the car is extremely quick and agile. The base price was around €32,000 for the 2.2 and €36,000 for the turbocharged version.
