A modern version of the 15th century Savonarola chair.
The Savonarola chair, named for Girolamo Savonarola, is a folding armchair dating from the Italian renaissance. Constructed from curved strips of wood, the chair forms an X shape and is sometimes called the X-chair.
The chair consists of a wooden flat-arched back rail connected to the back of the straight arms of the chair and a seat made of narrowly-fitted wooden slats. The type of wood used in construction of the chair is typically walnut, just as in other gothic Italian renaissance furniture pieces.
The Savonarola chair was the first important folding armchair created during the Italian gothic renaissance period.
The Savonarola chair shares some characteristics with the Dante chair.
