Caligae (Latin; singular caliga) are heavy-soled military shoes or sandals which were worn by Roman legionary soldiers and auxiliaries throughout the history of the Roman Republic and Empire. They were worn by all ranks up to and including centurions. This heavy sandal was very tough and long wearing. Their sole consisted of several layers of leather and was about 3/4" thick and studded with hob-nails in several distinctive patterns. The upper was cut in one piece and sewn up at the heel The front was laced up. In winter they could be stuffed with cloth or fur for warmth. This model represents this military sandal with one of these hob-nail pattern souls.
