The visit of such rooms and brothels is described in one of the best story "A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN" of the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov (1860-1904). " "Three students turned from Trubnaya Square on Grachevka and turned right on Sobolev Line. There were two rows of houses with brightly lit windows and doors wide open, hearing the cheerful sounds of pianos and violins - the sounds that flew from every door and mingled in a strange confusion, similar to the way that somewhere in the darkness above the roofs, tuned invisible orchestra. Vasiliev was surprised and said: - How many brothels! " - Yes! - Said the doctor. - In London, ten times more. There are about a hundred thousand such women".
