Perhaps the most beloved building of the Webb Schools is the Vivian Webb Chapel. The chapel has served as the center of community reflection and contemplation since its first use in 1943. One of the unique aspects of the chapel, and perhaps the reason it has become such an important part of the Webb culture, is that it was built largely by Thompson Webb himself – from the digging of the foundation, to the making and laying of the adobe brick to the construction of the roof. Its design was inspired by the mission chapel at San Juan Capistrano, conceptualized by Thompson Webb and finalized by Arcadia architect A. William Brandt. Chapel TalkThe chapel also features doors, furnishings and plaques carved by renowned Scottish sculptor Alec Miller who also created many of the carvings for the Coventry Cathedral in England. Among these are plaques bearing the likenesses of Thompson and Vivian Webb which now flank the eastern doorway. The last part of the chapel to be completed was Kimberly Memorial Tower, which was dedicated in 1955. The tower was the gift of two women, Mrs. Elbert W. Shirk and Mrs. Nathan Paine, in memory of their father, John A. Kimberly. The plans for the tower were donated by Pasadena architect Roland E. Coate.
