St Mary The Virgin Church, Godmanchester. Brief overview, the oldest part built in the 13th Century, other parts built in the 14th & 15th Century. The tower was built in 1623. The bells were cast in 1623. The left rear side of the church is a slightly different colour due to the lighting. I spent ages trying to get uniform colours, but weather and the sun were against me. National Heritage Description: Date Listed: 28 November 1950, Grade 2, The body of the church is C16, the west tower 1623, the chancel C13. Restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott, 1853. Brown rubble, the tower is ashlar. Included in the building are re-used materials from Romsey Abbey, with the Norman doorway to the tower, Huntingdon Priory and Hinchingbrooke Nunnery. 5 bay nave with clerestory aisles, 3 bay chancel of C13. Windows of the various periods. C13 mass dial on buttress. The tower is a very interesting piece of Gothic survival and is still a design of genuine Perpendicular character, spire of 1625. 2 storeyed south porch. Reredos and rood screen by Bodley 1901. Stalls of late C15 said to have come from Ramsey Abbey. Good misericords (Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v1.0.)
