This flagstaff resides on the Fort Smith National Historic Site. This 99' high mast is a replica of the 1846 original erected by the U.S. Army at the second Fort Smith. In 1984-85, local citizens support group, the "Old Fort Militia," cooperated with the National Park Service to reconstruct the flagstaff seen by park visitors today. The US flag itself is a reproduction of the final banner known to be flown from 1867-71. Two standards are employed: A 20'x35' 37-star garrison flag in summer and a 19'x35' 37-star storm banner in winter.
