The red in the background is the representation of the Turkish soldier's blood leaked all over the river bed! In the evening a moon and star appeared side by side (which is quite rare) and reflected on the pool of blood, hence the importance of the flag to the Republic of Turkey! The term 'Ay Yildiz' is just an expression of the symbolic representation of the moon and star is a symbol in Islam.
