This is a jig I use to sharpen the terminal part of the face (non-bevel side) of a plane blade. Only the terminal inch needs honing, but it needs to be done well. The edge in particular should be as finely honed as the bevel edge. This jig allows me to do so very easily: two wing knobs secure the blade to the jig, bevel up. The handle allows me to apply easy, steady, even pressure to the blade end, much better than if flattening the face by hand - and it goes much faster. The jig (and blade) are held perpendicular to the sharpening stone, or may be slightly angled, as the circumstances allow. Finally, there are four insert nuts fitted into the underside of the jig, to allow me to best secure blades of different sizes to the jig, by moving the wing knobs to the best positions
