Quickly designed, easy and very cheap to manufacture, and effective in use, the Sten sub-machine gun was an ideal weapon with which to begin the re-equipment of the British army in the dark days after its retirement from Europe in the Dunkirk evacuation of mid-1940. The weapon was extremely reliable, largely as a result of its simple design, and was steadily upgraded in features and basic finish as and when the time and manufacturing facilities became available in World War Two.
