Unlike most landing vehicles, which could only move through water, LVT's were capable of being launched directly from a ship off-shore, motoring to shore, and then driving up on land to deliver supplies and men to troops on shore before the larger transport ships could land actual tanks and trucks. The LVT A-4 included a 75mm Howitzer mounted in a turret aft, which allowed for tank-like fire support for the marines even in the opening minutes of an amphibious assault, when actual artillery guns and tanks could not yet be put ashore. The LVT A-4 and its other LVT relatives were incredible successes in the American "Island Hopping" campaigns during the latter half of the Pacific war of WWII. This particular model is an exact rendering of the A-32, which was destroyed in action during the Iwo Jima Campaign. The model was made using reference images and blueprints, and took about 8 hours over the course of two days to create.
