A waterline model without rigging, with a detailed interior of Charles Darwin's cabin, the Chart Room or "Poop Cabin". Beagle was a 10-gun brig, a small utility ship of the British Navy. The Chart Room on her main deck was added after she was built, in preparation for her role as a survey vessel. The mizzen mast (at the back) was added at the same time. On first and second voyages her crew mapped South America's southern coast. Darwin sailed on the second voyage (1831-1836) which had additional scientific and even social objectives. On her third voyage she charted much of the coast of Australia. In the 1840s she became a coast guard watch vessel in eastern England. She was sold and broken up in the 1870s. It is thought that sections of her hull may remain in riverbank mud where she spent her last 30 years. To see the Chart Room, select and hide the deck over the back part of the ship. The Chart Room detail was prepared using a plan that Darwin annotated himself. The deck plan and elevation of the hull are based on drawings in Darwin's book on the 1831-1836 voyage. The smaller boats, deck guns, hammock and ship's wheel are borrowed from other SketchUp Warehouse models. This is very much a "work in progress." It has been prepared as part of Royal Botanical Gardens' celebration of Charles Darwin's 200th Birthday Celebration Year, in 2009.
