The definition of “hardware” is ‘small goods or wares of metal’. Hardware stores, or ironmongers, sold a huge variety of goods, and the general rule was (as might be expected) that their stock was tailored to the needs of the clientele – in this case, the Ballarat gold field. Early hardware stores on the gold fields would have been fascinating places. They would have offered a wide range of goods and services to the residents of the gold fields: everything from picks and shovels and gold pans, to domestic items, tools, guns, explosives, furniture, lighting, gardening equipment. In fact, they provided the majority of household goods (both indoor and outdoor), as well as servicing the material needs of specialised industries such as undertakers, coach builders, wheelwrights, blacksmiths, farrier, farmers and grocers. Eyres Brothers and Newman also had gold mining companies and distilleries among their clientele. This 3D model ©2009-2010 3dskyline
