he football stadium at Haskell Indian Nations University was built in 1926 and remains the home of the school's football and track and field programs. The structure under the south bleachers known as Tinker Hall was used as residence space from the late 1940s into the 1970s. In 1926 a stadium dedication was held at Haskell; all Indians in the United States were invited for a “Great Powwow”. An estimated 4,000 tribal members attended, many of them camping in a tent city established on the Haskell Farm (with streets, running water, and electric lights put in for the occasion). Visitors participated in and enjoyed dances, speeches, presentations by the Haskell band and others, demonstrations, fireworks, and the famous Haskell production of the play “Hiawatha.” Over 100,000 white visitors attended from the nation and region for the festivities and ceremonies over several days. The final event was the football game in the completed stadium between Haskell and Bucknell University (which Haskell won to the delight of most of the crowd). This event was national news, and was the largest pan-Indian gathering to that date.
