The Ames Monument is a 60 foot high granite pyramid located in southeastern Albany County, Wyoming. It was built by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1882 and is dedicated to Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames, two Massachusetts brothers who were extremely influential in constructing the nation’s first Transcontinental Railroad. The monument was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, the pre-eminent American architect of the 19th century, and its bas-relief medallions were created by the prominent American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was placed at the highest point on the Transcontinental Railroad and serves as a splendid reminder of that great enterprise.
