This landmark allows pedestrian passage from Topsham to Brunswick, across the Androscoggin River. The bridge was constructed in 1892 by John A. Roebling Sons Company, the engineering firm that designed and built the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City and other bridges around the world. In the early 1900s the present steel towers replaced the original timber-framed towers. A flood destroyed the superstructure of the bridge in 1936 and was rebuilt in 1938 by WPA. The present steel railing and fencing replaced the timber railing. The towns of Brunswick, Topsham, Midcoast Council for Buisiness Development and Planning, the Brunswick Rotary, Maine Department of Transportation, and many private donors combined to fund and facilitate a major rehabilitation project in 2006. The bridge is on the National Registry of Historic Places and the Maine Inventory of Historic Resources.
