The classic original version of the Ingles Markets sign, used from 1963 on the original Ingles Market in Asheville until the late 1980s, when it was replaced with a sign made of brick that matched the new store designs. It has "ingles" in large white neon letters that light up red at night, an arrow pointing in the direction of the store, and a unique yellow marquee. These signs can be found on older Ingles Stores, and look very retro in combination with a "Disco Ingles," the store design for awhile in the 1970s and 80s, which used different shades of green, red, orange and yellow together in a very retro and unique way. If the store was attached to a pharmacy, which is oftentimes was, there would be a sign for the pharmacy between the legs below the marquee. Today, not very many of these signs remain, but where they do, they look very cool.
