In 1837 Illinois most famous resident and politician, Abraham Lincoln, helped author and pass a law for the Illinois State Capitol to be moved from Vandalia to Springfield. In 1839 the Old State Capitol building became the center of government for the fast growing state. The building's Greek Revival style is made unique by it's colorful stone cladding and light filled rotunda accented by a bright red roof. Following Lincoln's death in 1865 his body was put on display within the building which received thousands of visitors during it's brief showing. In 1961 the Old State Capital was designated a historic landmark and in 1966 it was added to the National register of historic places. Model created by Nathan Kohrmann.
