The Colorado Division of Wildlife maintains a residence on the entry road to the Blacktail unit of the Radium State Wildlife Area. In years gone by, the primary transportation in this rough hunting country was horses. Now they use 4 wheel ATVs and the horse barn and small handling corral sit empty. It's a fine timber structure, with round nails (where nails were used in the doors and trim), and a partial stone foundation, indicating a likely construction date of circa 1925-1935. The exit of Gore Canyon, where the Colorado River carves through the Gore Range, is just a few miles away. The folks at this DOW residence were so friendly, and so eager to help, that they even gave us a few leads on other historic barns. When you are off the main road this far, it's great to find folks that know the country and are glad to help a stranger. The land here looks dry and rough, but there's tons of wildlife and it's still very wild and free, even in sight of all the river recreation traffic up from State Bridge on the Trough Road.
