The M1 Garand is a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle developed by John C. Garand in the 1930's. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1936, it became the first semi-automatic rifle to become standard issue in a military force. The rifle is chambered in the 30-06 round and is fed by an eight round en-bloc clip. The action is cycled using a long-stroke piston that rotates the bolt and feeds a new round into the chamber. The weapon's sights consist of an adjustable rear aperture and a front three-pronged barleycorn sight. The M1C and M1D variants can accept a telescopic sight. Other attachments include a bayonet, M7 rifle grenade launcher, a flash hider, and a cheekpiece. The weapon saw widespread use in World War II and Korea, and limited service in Vietnam until replaced by the M14 rifle. Currently, it remains popular as a civilian rifle, and some manufacturers have offered variants chambered in the popular .308 Winchester round.
