Being inspired by Michel Rojkind's designs I went out and took some pictures of bark on trees in my neighborhood. I was looking for patterns of roughly same sized irregular polygons. I brought these images into SketchUp and traced along the bark patterns. Then used the offset tool to give each polygon a border, extruded all these through a TIN surface, did an intersect with model, and gave the various surfaces different textures. Quite nice I think. :-)
