SHELTERION: Shelterion sits on the site of what once was the largest sawmill in the world, The Port Blakely Sawmill, during the turn of the 18th/19th century. Now a wildlife preserve, at the head of Port Blakely Harbor on Bainbridge Island, and located directly adjacent to the GENERATOR building (The sawmill's abandoned concrete cube, only remaining monument) SHELTERION provides shelter and temporary residence for traveling artists and sages to observe nature while using the GENERATOR building as a canvas. The Port Blakely Sawmill once provided a thriving economy and shanty town for migrant workers to clear-cut old-growth trees from the Island, and workers helped gentrify the Indigenous tribes that called the island their home. Prior to being the world's largest sawmill, Port Blakely Harbor was home to a thriving tribal community, living in complete balance with nature. The appropriation and reclamation of the site by (now) generations of artists has proven to follow the tradition of the site's history of creating community, as well as heal the ignorant destruction caused during the industrial revolution. SHELTERION is an homage to the tribal structures that once populated the land, while also referencing elements of the Generator building, indigenous vegetation, and stylistic elements of artists works from the site. SHELTERION is a sculptural sacred space.
