Crooked Pine expresses a truly “Western” architecture reflecting place and context. The home is built around and takes its name from the 120 year old crooked pine tree located outside the east-facing great room wall of glass. Situated at the intersection of the ‘planes’ of the Rocky Mountains, northwest of Boulder, and the Great Plains, the home’s predominant interior and exterior material is native sandstone, re-laid from the eroding sandstone formation located on the site, similar to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling water. The sculptural forms comprising the home are drawn from early Anasazi architecture and interior/exterior metal detailing, such as the kitchen pot rack, entry chandelier, hammered railings and structural entry column hearken back to images of Colorado's mining heritage. EFCO commercial storefront and overhead glazing capture not only the panoramic views of the Great Plains to the east, but Zen views of the mountainside and adjacent mountain meadow and allow a blurring of interior/exterior experience.
